The term is new but the practice is quite old. It was certainly done when I was at uni in the 1980s. "If he/she has not introduced you to his/her friends, you are not their girlfriend/boyfriend" was a frequent topic of conversation. It was not uncommon to have a sex partner one didn't acknowledge in public. Some used it to hide that they were in a relationship at all, others used it to hide a secondary relationship.
