Tales from the Salacious Memoirs: The Office Manager

This is a true story, ripped from the pages of my salacious memoirs, from about 23 years ago. It’s totally NSFW, in case you were wondering.

At the time I was working as the sales manager of a small technology sales and service firm. The regular office staff consisted of about eight people, with about twice as many more salespeople and service techs, who mainly worked out of their homes and occasionally visited the office when necessary for paperwork or equipment. As sales manager I coordinated the activities of all the salespeople who worked in roughly a 300-mile radius of the office. Most of my day was spent near the telephone, since the salespeople might call at any time or I might need to call them with a new sales lead. While those of us in the office did socialize somewhat, we mostly kept to ourselves for large chunks of the day at a time. The building would usually empty for lunch except for two of us, the office manager who was a corporate veteran named Sandra, and me. We both regularly brought our lunches to work and ate in our respective offices. After a few months we realized we were almost always the only people in the building during the noon hour and began eating lunch together, generally in her office since it had two desks and access to all the phone lines. During that time we would talk about the events of the day, items from the news, and some portion of our personal lives. Sandra was 53 and I was 26, so some of our conversations were about generational differences but we mostly talked as equals.
