The twist I didn’t see coming

In watching Season 2 of Silo (AppleTV+) again this past weekend, I was struck by the interaction of Bernard and Judge Meadows. Of course, there was the revelation she had been Bernard’s shadow until 25 years ago, which was a bit of a surprise, but there was also the revelation she and Bernard had once had a more personal relationship. Clearly, Bernard wasn’t a mustache-twirling villain regarding how he felt about Mary Meadows. In watching the physicality of the actors in their scenes, it appeared to me the implication was that Bernard and Mary had once had a physical relationship, and not a brief one. There’s a comfort level between them of existing in each other’s physical space, having once shared intimacy, and being at ease with the close presence of the other. When Bernard said he would be the one taking her measurements for her suit, there was no element of concern about this from Judge Meadows, as one might expect if their former boss said they were going to take their body measurements. Her reaction was more like, “Of course, it would be you.” In the scene in Judge Meadow’s quarters in which Bernard was taking the measurements, there was comfort seen in her with his closeness.
