Don’t Believe Employer Reviews
Negative reviews get rejected to maintain positive impressions.
Several years ago I posted an online review of a former employer at one of those popular review sites. All of the other reviews on the site were glowing and positive. I decided to tell it like it really was. I wouldn’t say my review was necessarily “negative” but I didn’t sugarcoat anything. I told what the typical workday would be like, what could realistically be expected from the pay structure, and what the performance expectations were as outlined in the new-hire paperwork and on a day-to-day basis. I pointed out how some of the other reviews didn’t tell the whole truth when it came to any of those things.
I submitted my review and thought nothing else of it.
A couple of days later I received an email notification that my review had been rejected for being “too specific” and providing “too many insider details.” I couldn’t believe it. I hadn’t provided any more details than any other review, I had just been realistic about them. I wasn’t selling the job. I was informing the reader of what could be realistically expected.
I removed details from my review and resubmitted it.
